If your commute has recently started resembling a particularly ambitious game of Frogger, thereโs a good reason for that.
With the FIFA World Cup bringing thousands of fans, international attention, and enough team jerseys to outfit a small nation to the New York metro area, a number of streets and traffic patterns are temporarily getting a major shake-up. Whether you’re a die-hard soccer supporter or simply someone trying to get from Point A to Point B without accidentally wandering into a sea of chanting fans, it’s worth knowing which roads will be closed and when.
Consider this your survival guide to navigating the city during one of the world’s biggest sporting events, because while the beautiful game may be taking center stage, your morning commute still has to happen.

🛑 The Golden Rule: Don’t Drive in Midtown

Your best play: Walk, bike, or take the subway.
🚌 Midtown Bus-Only Corridors & Street Closures
To move tens of thousands of fans via the Lincoln Tunnel to the stadium in New Jersey, NYC is carving out massive, dedicated bus corridors.
โ ๏ธ Timing Rule: These dedicated spaces activate 6 hours before local matches start and remain in place until 3 hours after they end.
The Bus-Only Zones (No regular traffic allowed):
- 42nd Street: Converted to a bus-only corridor entirely from First Avenue to Twelfth Avenue (River to River).

- Fifth Avenue: The two existing bus lanes will be strictly enforced from 42nd Street to 59th Street.
- West 40th & 41st Streets: Closed to standard traffic. 40th St is bus-only between 8th and 11th Avenues; 41st St is bus-only between 8th and 10th Avenues.

Access to these lanes is strictly limited to NYNJ Stadium shuttles, MTA buses, official World Cup vehicles, and emergency services.
Penn Station Pedestrian Closures:
To handle massive crowds queuing for transit, expect major street closures around Penn Station starting 6 hours before matches:
- 33rd Street will close completely to vehicles between 6th and 8th Avenues. (The block between 7th and 8th Avenues stays closed until 3 hours after matches finish).
- 32nd Street will close between 6th and 7th Avenues.
🚛 Commercial Truck Restrictions

⚽ Fan Info: Catching the Stadium Shuttle
If you are a ticketholder heading out to the match, Official NYNJ Stadium shuttle buses will run non-stop express service directly to the stadium via the Lincoln Tunnel.

You can catch these express shuttles at three designated Manhattan hubs:
- Port Authority Bus Terminal
- Midtown North (at Columbus Circle)
- Midtown East (near Grand Central)
๐จ A Note on Public Safety: NYPD is stepping up security measures across the city, including specialized protocols to protect high-crowd zones from weaponized drone threats. Play it safe, use public transit, and if your celebration involves drinking, let someone else “lend the assist” and get you home via transit or a cab.
