Coney Island once again turned into a colorful, semi-naked, glittery extravangaza for the 37th annual Mermaid Parade.
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade has remained one of Brooklyn’s biggest attractions year after year, with an estimated whopping 850,000 people present at this year’s event—decked out in sea-inspired costumes! The parade took place on Saturday, June 22, on the first official day of summer. The artist-created holiday had roughly 3,000 parade participants this year making their way from Surf Avenue to Steeplechase Plaza in some of the most amazing costumes to date.
Each year the event ends with somewhat of a Mer-pageant where the best costumes are honored as a queen mermaid and king Neptune. This year those titles went to none other than the children of Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie and Nora Guthrie, who grew up on Mermaid Avenue. That said, there were plenty of amazing costumes debuted on the gorgeous day. Here’s a look at some of our favorites:
