Mauch Chunk Lake Park is a massive county park that encompasses approximately 3,400 acres of forestland.
Whether you want to pitch a tent under the stars or paddleboard across calm waters, this destination offers an incredible dose of European charm and outdoor adventure just outside the city.
A 350-acre lakeside oasis
Originally built as a flood control project, the park is now a celebrated recreation hub that even earned the title of National Watershed of the Year. The absolute star of the show is the 350-acre lake, which is entirely open for fishing, boating, and swimming.
During the warmer months, you can relax on the sand at the beach area, which features play equipment for children and offers a picturesque view of Flagstaff Mountain.
If you want to get out on the water, you can easily rent canoes, kayaks, rowboats, paddleboats, and stand-up paddleboards right at the boat launch.
Camping and cabins for every comfort level
You do not need to be a survivalist to enjoy a night in the woods here. The park offers camping from mid-April through late October, giving you plenty of time to plan a seasonal trip.
You can choose between primitive tent sites for a rugged experience or book one of their camping cottages. The cottages come equipped with electricity, a picnic table, a fire ring with a cooking grill, and parking for one vehicle.
Just remember to leave the pets and alcohol at home, as both are strictly prohibited to ensure a peaceful stay.
Hit the trails and explore the wildlife
If you prefer to stay on dry land, the park is an absolute paradise for hikers and bikers. The most popular route is the Switchback Trail, a historic pathway connecting Jim Thorpe and Summit Hill that has been part of the National Trails System since 1980.
For a quieter stroll, check out the Shoreline Trail. This hiking-only path weaves through wetlands and rhododendron thickets, making it a prime spot for bird watching.

Mauch Chunk Lake Park is located just 4 miles from the downtown historic district of Jim Thorpe, making it incredibly easy to explore local shops and cafes during your stay.

Daily Admission (Non-County): $10.00 for adults, $7.00 for children (4-12 yrs). Seniors 65+ and children 3 & under are free.
Camping Rates (Non-County): Tent sites range from $27.00 to $40.00 per night. Cottages are $100.00 per night. (Note: Cottages require a two-night stay on weekends during the summer season).

🕐 Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., or until sunset. The beach and swimming area are open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day.
