The new Russ & Daughters outpost in the Brooklyn Navy Yard has been a long time coming, and now it’s finally open!
The famous shop on East Houston Street—which has been around for over a century—has expanded into a massive, 18,000-square-foot space in Brooklyn. Yesterday (Monday, February 11), the doors opened on the ground floor of Building 77 “with a production kitchen, bakery, retail counter, and private event space.” This Russ & Daughters location will also be used as their flagship office for nationwide shipping and is set up to bring New Yorkers all the same items you’d find at their shop in the Lower East Side.
While this isn’t Russ & Daughters’ first expansion, it’s definitely their largest and furthest. Other openings included their cafe (which is around the corner from the LES shop), and their restaurant at the Jewish Museum. The Brooklyn Navy Yard location will offer breakfast, lunch, take-away and both on and off-site catering. Russ & Daughters took to Instagram yesterday to announce the news with an extensive caption that read:
ANNOUNCING RUSS & DAUGHTERS AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD! Our Appetizing Factory is open! Featuring our bakery (on view for all), appetizing shop where you can get your favorite classic bagels & lox or smoked fish and schmears by the pound, traditional baked goods right out of the oven, nationwide shipping facility, kitchens, and event space!
Since 1914, the Lower East Side has been the historic and spiritual home and grounding nexus of Russ & Daughters. In 2014, on our 100th anniversary, we opened Russ & Daughters Cafe to feed—literally and figuratively—the desire to eat our food sitting in our space. With the addition of Russ & Daughters at the Jewish Museum in 2016, we extended our base from the Lower East Side to the Upper East Side.
Today, we’re thrilled that Russ & Daughters is also part of the Brooklyn community. We’ve designed and built out an 18,000 sq ft base of operations, which includes our bakery, nationwide shipping facility, kitchens, a beautiful appetizing store, and events space. We’ve poured ourselves into this project to ensure that Russ & Daughters thrives while staying in NYC for generations to come. We think Joel Russ, our great-grandfather and founder, and his daughters, would be proud. We hope that you will be too.
This is more than another location. Visit our Appetizing Factory and see our bakery where we make bagels, bialys, babka, breads (and other delicious eats that don’t start with “b”). Next to the bakery is our appetizing counter, where you can pick up food to take home, or enjoy on site.
Russ & Daughters at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is located in Building 77, the former depot for supplies that were loaded onto the naval ships built here, which like the rest of the Yard, houses a vibrant community of businesses, artists, craftspeople, and industry. Just as Russ & Daughters has been part of the fabric of New York for over a century; the Navy Yard has done so for over 200 years.
We hope you’ll come experience this living history while you watch us make the foods you love. Take a number and order at the counter, just like you do in Manhattan. —Niki Russ Federman & Josh Tupper: 4th Generation Owners, Cousins, Bagels & Lox Mavens
