With Memorial Day Weekend (aka the unofficial start of summer) just days away, many New Yorkers are plotting where to fire up the grill for the season’s first barbecue.
While some will flock to more crowded shorelines and buzzing boardwalks, others are searching for something a little quieter: a breezy beach day where kids can run around freely, the smell of burgers fills the air, and the soundtrack is crashing waves instead of crowds.
If this sounds like what you’re searching for, we have you covered. Tucked away in southern Brooklyn, Manhattan Beach has long been that particular type of hidden gem. It’s a peaceful, family-friendly escape where summer weekends still feel wonderfully simple.

🌊 Brooklyn’s Sun-Soaked Secret Weapon
If Coney Island is a high-energy summer anthem, Manhattan Beach is a mellow acoustic track.
This local–favorite stretch trades in the roaring roller coasters and packed boardwalks for a distinctly laid-back, community-centric atmosphere.
Surrounded by the quiet, tree-lined streets of one of southern Brooklyn’s most peaceful residential neighborhoods, the beach feels like a hidden sanctuary where time slows down.
Because the harbor’s waves are exceptionally gentle, it’s a haven for parents teaching toddlers to wade, friends setting up beach volleyball showdowns, and anyone looking to read a book in peace. It’s the ultimate backyard-style hangout, just with a much better view.

☀️ Fire Up the Grill: The Beach & Barbecue Setup
While the sand itself is reserved strictly for sunbathing and building sandcastles, Manhattan Beach is incredibly unique for its designated, highly popular grilling zones located just off the sand.
While you can’t barbecue on the actual beach, you can set up your station in designated areas, including the median adjacent to the parking lot, northeast of the promenade, and near Oriental Boulevard & Hastings Street.
To ensure a seamless barbecue, you’ll need to keep a few key NYC Parks grilling regulations in mind. While charcoal grilling is highly encouraged, propane tanks are strictly prohibited, and if your beach bash is hosting more than 20 people, you’ll need to secure a Special Event Permit ahead of time.
For safety, your grill must be elevated at least three feet off the ground and placed a minimum of 10 feet away from trees, roots, and park structures. Finally, when the cooking is wrapped up, make sure to completely extinguish your hot coals with water and toss them exclusively into the designated red barrels scattered around the park.
🚅 Mapping Your Route: How to Get There
Manhattan Beach’s secluded vibe is largely thanks to its geography, but it is still highly accessible whether you are driving or taking public transit.
- By Car: If you choose to drive, Manhattan Beach features a massive dedicated public parking lot located right next to the beach. Rates apply during the summer peak season, and because it is one of the few city beaches with such convenient parking right next to the grilling areas, the lot fills up incredibly fast on holiday weekends. Arrive early to secure your spot!
- By Subway: Take the B or Q train to the Brighton Beach or Sheepshead Bay station. From either stop, it’s a pleasant 15-to-20-minute walk through the residential neighborhood, or you can hop onto the B1 or B49 bus to be dropped off right near the park entrance on Oriental Boulevard.
