Here we go again: Mamma Mia is on its way back to Broadway this summer, and we certainly can’t resist her.
Needless to say, the iconic Broadway show — the ninth longest-running of all time — is beloved for the quirky storyline and celebration of ABBA music. Mamma Mia focuses on a young woman on the eve of her wedding as she tries to uncover her father’s true identity. This quest sends three fellas from her mother’s past back to the island they all visited many moons ago, and of course, a whirlwind ensues. The beloved tale has made its way from the stage to screen, but it’s clear fans can’t resist its original format.
“Despite the glowing reception we received in those markets [film], nothing could have prepared us for the outpouring of love and acclaim (and dancing in the aisles!) that overwhelmed us when we arrived in New York at the magnificent Winter Garden Theatre,” said producer Judy Craymer in a statement. “It’s truly fantastic to bring the original production back to its Broadway home after 24 years.”
Theater buffs will have to be patient, as the show opens on August 14th (previews begin August 2nd). If this is one of your all-time favorite performances, keep in mind you’ll only have six months to catch it. Casting for the return engagement and ticket sales are still under wraps, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
