If your weekend plans involve hopping on the subway, you may want to add a few extra minutes to your schedule.
The MTA is rolling out a major round of construction-related service changes on the 1, 2, and 3 trains in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn starting this weekend, meaning detours, skipped stops, and altered service are on the way. Here’s everything you need to know before heading underground.
Major Subway Service Disruptions (July 24 – August 24)
Beginning this weekend (Friday, July 24) and continuing every weekend through August 24, riders should expect service changes from Fridays as early as 9:30 pm through Mondays at 5 am.

Here’s what to expect over the next five weekends:
1 Trains: Downtown Detour
- The 1 train won’t run south of 14 St, meaning there will be no 1 service between 14 St and South Ferry all weekend
2 & 5 Trains: Bronx-to-Manhattan Shake-Up
- The 2 train will only operate between Eastchester-Dyre Av and 34 St–Penn Station
- 2 trains will replace 5 service between E 180 St and Eastchester-Dyre Av
- 5 trains will run between Wakefield-241 St and Flatbush Av–Brooklyn College, making express stops along the Lexington Avenue line in Manhattan and local stops in Brooklyn
3 Trains: Completely Out of Service
- The 3 train will be completely suspended between Harlem-148 St and New Lots Av throughout each affected weekend
4 Train: Picking Up the Slack
- 4 trains will replace 3 service between Crown Heights–Utica Av and New Lots Av all weekend

Why Is This Happening?
The MTA is utilizing this window to perform critical work to improve service reliability and deliver a smoother ride.
This includes replacing switches in Lower Manhattan that are past their useful life. While the ongoing work causes quite the headache for travelers, these upgrades are designed to provide better on-time performance and “keep New York moving.”
Pro-Tip: always check the MTA app or mta.info before traveling, as last-minute changes can occur. You can also sign up for email and SMS alerts tailored to your specific commutes and travel times.
