Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy has become one of this year’s monumental art exhibitions – and it has just been extended through February 23rd. It’s located at The Shed, which is right in Hudson Yards (at 545 W 30th St., between 10th and 11th Avenues).
Showcasing the world’s first art amusement park, this large-scale installation features carnival rides and attractions by visionary artists of the 20th century. These esteemed visionaries include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Sonia Delaunay, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein, and more.
The artist and mastermind behind Luna Luna is André Heller, who first unveiled this extraordinary exhibition in Hamburg, Germany, in 1987. However, a twist of fate caused these beautiful artifacts to be forgotten, sealed away for over three decades in 44 shipping containers in Texas.
Now, after more than 30 years, visitors have the rare opportunity to witness these wondrous treasures. Luna Luna comes alive with stunning visuals, rich history, and captivating stories displayed throughout the space.
Those of us from the Secret NYC crew who went absolutely loved it! The characters who roamed around were so fun, the ambience and light shows were enthralling, and there were so many surprises worth exploring beyond the art installations.
The soundtrack was incredible, featuring new music from André 3000, David Byrne, Jamie xx, Mark Pritchard and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
There’s even a fun wedding chapel where you can get married to anyone or anything you’d like – or just attend a service! We also loved the mini-playground of interactive geometric sculptures.
Beyond its sheer magnetism, this multi-sensory experience will host various activations and special events while on view. In total, it should take visitors about 75 minutes to enjoy the entire experience that has now taken over The Shed’s McCourt and Level 2 Gallery.
