With major historic openings taking over New York City this year like the legendary Jacob Riis bathhouse restoration and the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, Lower Manhattan’s stunning new 360º observation deck, New Yorkers’ summer bucket lists are officially overflowing.
But the city isn’t done yet—and this time, the spotlight is shining directly on the South Bronx.
A massive waterfront transformation is currently reaching the finish line along the Harlem River. The highly anticipated Lower Concourse Park is poised to bring 2.3 acres of gorgeous, manicured park space, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and unprecedented waterfront access to a neighborhood that has eagerly awaited it for years.
A $35 Million Waterfront Transformation
The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and NYC Parks officially broke ground on the ambitious project back in late November 2023.
Strategically located on Exterior Street between East 144th and 146th Streets, the park represents a vital piece of the city’s larger $194 million Lower Concourse Infrastructure Plan–a historic investment designed to make local streets safer, support mixed-income housing, and connect residents directly to the water.
Before construction could even begin, crews had to completely clear underutilized industrial land, demolish old structures, and install massive utility upgrades (including brand-new water mains and sewers) to prepare the site for its green era.
Now, the once-industrial stretch is being completely reborn into a vibrant public oasis.
Mind-Blowing Amenities Coming To The Shoreline
The extensive project completely reimagines what a day on the South Bronx waterfront looks like, blending cutting-edge environmental resiliency with top-tier recreational spaces.

- An Eco-Friendly Living Shoreline: Built specifically to protect the park from erosion, trap greenhouse gases, and utilize native plants and rain gardens to naturally absorb excess stormwater and mitigate flooding
- Open-Air Spaces & Comforts: A sprawling flex-use lawn perfect for sunbathing or yoga, native trees providing lush shade canopy, bike racks, hi-lo drinking fountains, and a brand-new public restroom facility
When Can New Yorkers Visit?
The project is currently listed by the NYCEDC as “ongoing” and is on track for an official debut to the public.
While city officials initially projected a construction completion date for the end of last year with doors opening in 2026, exact seasonal dates have not yet been made public.
