Summer is practically knocking on our doors and Long Island is gearing up for a holiday kickoff like no other.
Governor Kathy Hochul just announced that Jones Beach State Park will transform into a completely immersive historical playground to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution on May 23 and May 24.
The absolute best part is that parking will be completely free all Memorial Day weekend long so you can save your cash for the amazing food popups and nearby attractions!
Here’s everything you need to know.

What to expect at this epic 250th Anniversary Commemoration
The sprawling beach park is pulling out all the stops for this historic celebration.
According to the official press release, visitors will be able to step right back into 1776 at a massive Reenactment Village located right between Parking Fields 3 and 4.
From noon to 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, you can mingle with costumed historians and take in the vibrant sights of the Revolutionary era.
Here are a few of the most exciting things happening over the holiday:
- Jaw dropping aerial displays: Look up to the sky starting at noon each day to catch legendary Warbirds soaring over the coast courtesy of the American Airpower Museum.
- Immersive living history: Watch incredible actors portraying the 5th New York Regiment and the 1st Rhode Island Regiment alongside appearances from historical heavyweights like George Washington on horseback, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson giving a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence.
- Cultural and culinary exhibits: Check out the Shinnecock Cultural Display to learn about Indigenous traditions and sustainable practices or catch a super authentic open air colonial cooking demonstration on Sunday.
- A breathtaking 1,000 drone light show: The grand finale on Sunday evening is going to be spectacular. Head to the Central Mall Bandshell from 6 pm to 9 pm for a live musical tribute followed by a massive 20 minute synchronized drone show over the Atlantic Ocean produced by Grizzly Entertainment.

Kick off your summer the right way
Since Memorial Day weekend officially marks the start of ocean swimming at Jones Beach State Park, you can easily pair your history lesson with a classic beach day.
The park concessionaire is expanding their food offerings with brand new pop up tents along the Center Boardwalk.
There is even going to be an authentic Greek food truck parking at the West Bathhouse for when those Mediterranean cravings hit.
History buffs feeling inspired by the aerial flyovers can keep the adventure going with a trip to the nearby Cradle of Aviation Museum.
You can also simply relax and grab some fresh catches along the Long Island Seafood Cuisine Trail or hit up the stunning dunes at Robert Moses State Park.
