Sex-positivity is in. We’re talking about, learning about, even laughing about sex. And NYC has all the quirky (and kinky) venues for it.
So what is sex positivity, how do you do it, and where do you find it?
Sex positivity is just what it sounds like—having a positive attitude about sex rather than a negative one. This means replacing judgment and self-consciousness with open-mindedness and self-respect. It means recognizing that sex is a source of happiness, not a source of shame.
Babeland in Soho and Brooklyn is a sex shop that fosters sex positivity with its warm, comfortable shopping atmosphere (an alternative to your typical dim-lit, sketchy, even intimidating sex shops), and its educational events, in which all genders and sexualities are welcome. Upcoming classes include “G-Spots and P-Spots for Beginners” this weekend, and “Positions for the Bedroom” the next. Everyone is there to learn, so no need to feel self-conscious—and classes are open to anyone (as long as you’re 18 or older).
“Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man” is a hilarious theatrical comedy, adapted from the book by the same title. Performed live every weekend at The 777 Theater, this show is sure to have you busting a gut laughing, with its star’s outrageous (and true?) moves and advice.
Wednesday nights at Greenwich Village Comedy Club are dedicated to The Week In Sex. What you might usually enjoy as a podcast about a different sex topic each week you can enjoy as a live comedy show featuring comedians with credits like Comedy Central and America’s Got Talent. And if you buy tickets on Fever, you can get an exclusive discount of more than 50 percent off.
Remember: kink is for girls, and boys, and everyone in between. Check out one of these sex-positive events. Learn, laugh, and rejoice that we don’t live in the Victorian era anymore. Well, at least not here in New York City.
