The Last Sears In NYC Will Close This November

The Flatbush location will shut its doors the day before Thanksgiving.

After 90 years of operation, the last Sears in NYC will close before the year’s end, reported CBS. Large department stores (like the Astor Place Kmart, soon to be a Wegmans) have been facing numerous closures in recent years and the number of Sears still open across the country continues to dwindle.

For years, Sears was the department store of choice for American shoppers as the company sold nearly everything you could ever need. “They were doing it before Amazon,” shopper Tyrone Saunders told CBS. “You could buy houses … order houses from Sears.”

The Flatbush location first opened back in 1932. And though the Sears may be shutting down, no harm will come to the Art Deco, three-story building on Beverley Road as it was deemed a historic landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2012.

According to CBS, the closure is necessary “[i]n order to redevelop and reinvigorate the property,” shared Sears in a statement. “This is part of the company’s strategy to unlock the value of the real estate and pursue the highest and best use for the benefit of the local community.”

Shoppers last day will be November 24th, 2021.
