You won’t need a passport to visit this village straight out of a European storybook because it’s only an hour drive from NYC! Sparta, New Jersey, situated on Lake Mohawk, offers a bucolic Swiss Alpine-inspired village, complete with a scenic boardwalk, ice cream shops and decorative architecture reminiscent of a European lakeside village.
The history of Lake Mohawk dates back to the 1920s whens Arthur D. Crane developed the lake to be a private, resort community. He modeled its downtown area, known as White Deer Plaza, after Swiss and other European countries’ structures. One look at the downtown’s gabled/slate roofs, eclectic window boxes, timber framing, and ornate shutters will transport you to a dreamy getaway that won’t take a 7+ hour flight to get to.
As intended, wealthy New Jerseyeans populated the community with nearly 10,000 residents as of the 2023 census. However, the dreamy lakefront is a popular weekend destination for city dwellers looking for an alternative to the Hamptons or a trip Upstate. The New Jersey Register of Historic Places even awarded the community with historic status in 1998.

Lake Mohawk is a private, man-made reservoir spanning 800-acres. So although there are plenty of places offering boat rentals near the water, you’ll need to own property in the community, be a member of Lake Mohawk Country Club, or have a connection to a resident/member to hit the water. Keep in mind the lake upholds strict motor regulations and rules.
Don’t have friends in high places or simply without sea legs? Be sure to stroll the boardwalk and pop into a business or two before catching an amazing sunset. Some portions of the boardwalk are closed off to residents only.

Moreover, the town is nearby various hiking trails and parks, including Sparta Glen Park, for those looking to get active.
