After a bit of back-and-forth between representatives for Madison Square Garden and New York City officials, the highly anticipated Game 4 watch party outside MSG has officially been canceled.

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon, just hours before tip-off, ending what many Knicks fans had hoped would be another electric gathering in the heart of Manhattan. The outdoor watch parties outside Madison Square Garden have become a defining image of this playoff run, transforming Midtown blocks into a sea of blue and orange and showcasing the unmatched passion of New York basketball fans.

In a post on Twitter, New Yorrk City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said:

MSG requested a permit for a watch party for 500-999 fans. We approved that permit for 999 fans. Mr. Dolan has now decided to cancel the watch party. I know this is breaking hearts across our city. But if there’s one thing Knicks fans don’t need permission for, it’s showing up for our team wherever we may be — no matter the block or the borough. Knicks in five.

The decision follows criticism from Madison Square Garden Sports, which argued that the city’s permit conditions limited attendance and imposed restrictions that would have significantly changed the fan experience. Knicks owner James Dolan also addressed the situation during an interview on WFAN, citing heightened security measures around Game 4 as a factor behind the decision.

After the highly anticipated official Knicks watch party outside Madison Square Garden was abruptly canceled ahead of Monday night’s Game 3 due to heightened security measures, New Yorkers did what they do best: they adapted. Fans packed viewing events from Central Park and Bryant Park to local pizzerias and corner bodegas. Does it get any more New York than that?

Now, Knicks fans have received a massive update: Madison Square Garden has announced that official outdoor watch parties are returning tonight for Game 4, albeit in a highly secure, modified format.

Watch Party Location and Entry Point

The official outdoor watch party is returning to Plaza33, located just west of Madison Square Garden.

To get inside the viewing area, you must enter through a designated security screening checkpoint located on the west side of Sixth Avenue at West 33rd Street. Keep in mind that the city is enforcing a strict no-reentry policy: once you are in the party zone, you cannot leave and come back.

Timeline: Gates Open & Tip-Off Times

• 4:30 p.m.: The security checkpoint opens for ticket holders.
• Game Time: Tip-off for Game 4 is scheduled for tonight (Wednesday).

Arrive early. Because of the intensive screening process, lines are expected to move slowly, and you’ll want to secure your spot before the game starts.

The New Midtown Security Perimeter

The city has established a massive security perimeter surrounding Madison Square Garden that will completely change how Midtown looks tonight.

The lockdown zone stretches from West 29th Street to West 35th Street, between Sixth and Eighth avenues. Starting at 4:00 p.m., Seventh Avenue within this perimeter will be completely closed to vehicle traffic and most pedestrians. Eighth Avenue will remain open for now, but police warn they may shut it down too if crowds get too large.

Inside the secure perimeter, local bars and restaurants will operate under strict capacity limits. If you are heading into the watch party zone, the following items are completely banned:

• Backpacks and large bags
• Outside alcohol
• Umbrellas

Penn Station Exception: If you are a traveler heading directly into Penn Station with luggage, you will be allowed through the security zone, but expect to be fully screened.

How to Get Tickets for Plaza33

Unlike previous casual gatherings, you cannot just wander into Plaza33 tonight. The watch party is now a fully ticketed event. The NYPD and city officials are using ticketing to control crowd sizes and ensure everyone passes through proper security. If you don’t have a ticket, you won’t be allowed past the Sixth Avenue gates.

Because MSG Sports has publicly pushed back against these tight restrictions—citing that they hurt local businesses and limit fan celebration—space inside Plaza33 is more limited than usual.
