If flaky patties filled with mouthwatering seasoned meats, vegetables, and spices tickle your fancy, then boy are you in for a treat. Beloved Caribbean fast-food chain Juici Patties has made its NYC debut hailing all the way from Jamaica (not Queens), and if you ask us a flaky patty is the perfect accompaniment to a summer picnic in the park.
Juici Patties was founded in Jamaica by then 16-year-old Jukie Chin, who started making the patties in his mother’s kitchen and selling them in his parents’ grocery store. The first Juici Patties location opened in 1980 with only three employees–a cashier, a baker, and Jukie himself–and it eventually grew to become the largest and most popular patty restaurant in Jamaica!
And for good reason, too–the flaky, golden, handmade pastries are filled with traditionally seasoned and savory Jamaican flavors before being baked to perfection–they’re seriously too good to pass up! Today, Chin’s son Daniel leads the Juici Patties American team, and they’re serving up some serious Jamaican flavor to serious Jamaican food lovers.
Juici Patties opened in Bed-Stuy on Sunday, April 27th. The company reportedly chose Central Brooklyn for its debut location due to the borough’s vibrant Caribbean heritage. Not long after, a Bronx location opened in the Boogie Down Food Hall on Thursday, May 22nd. Daniel Chin stated of the shop’s NYC debut:
Brooklyn’s rich Caribbean influence and forward-thinking food culture made it the perfect home for our first New York location. We’re not just opening a restaurant – we’re becoming part of a borough that has embraced Caribbean traditions for generations. Juici Patties will be another thread in the cultural fabric that connects Brooklyn to Jamaica.
Both counter-service restaurants serve their signature flaky patties, filled with either beef (mild or spicy), spicy curry chicken, or spinach (which are vegan!). The patties are sold as is or with cheese, as well as à la carte or in combos. The menu also features buttery coco bread, fries, and plantains.
The best part: this is just the start of the chain’s NYC takeover–the brand reportedly has plans to open additional outposts in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and eventually Queens. Learn more on Juici Patties’ website.
