For generations of New Yorkers, the iconic oceanfront destination has been synonymous with sun-soaked beach days, boardwalk strolls, seaside concerts, and Fourth of July celebrations under the stars.
But this summer, the beloved Long Island landmark is preparing for something even bigger.
As America gears up to celebrate its 250th birthday, Jones Beach State Park will become the backdrop for one of the region’s most spectacular events yet, transforming its famous shoreline into a massive waterfront celebration complete a jaw-dropping fireworks display.
Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and the park’s historic Art Deco architecture, the celebration promises to be one of the most memorable summer events near NYC.
The July 4th Fireworks Spectacular (9:30 PM)
The centerpiece of Independence Day is the Jovia Financial Credit Union Fireworks Spectacular, kicking off precisely at 9:30 PM on Saturday, July 4th.
This year’s 25-minute display will feature more than 5,000 shells launched from a barge stationed 2,000 feet offshore, painting the night sky with candy-colored patterns, floral designs, and massive golden weeping willows.
- The Soundtrack: The entire show is perfectly computerized and choreographed to a star-studded playlist. Expect to see “ghost rings” ignite to Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ’em, a cracking flower segment timed to Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer, and aqua-and-pink effects dancing to Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night.
- The Patriotic Finale: The show wraps up with Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston’s stirring rendition of America the Beautiful, and a high-intensity John Philip Sousa finale.
- How to Listen: Spectators can listen to the synchronized music live along the boardwalk or tune in via radio simulcast on WALK 97.5 FM or KJOY 98.3 FM.
All-Day Boardwalk Entertainment
The park—celebrating the 100th anniversary of New York State Parks—will be buzzing with activities long before the first firework is launched:
- 12:00 PM: Heritage booths open along the boardwalk, allowing history buffs to stroll through a decade-by-decade look at NY State Parks from the 1920s to the 2020s.
- 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Costumed characters, including Spiderman and beauty-and-the-beast favorites, will roam the boardwalk for family photo-ops.
- Live Music: A live band takes the stage from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM, pausing for the fireworks, and returning for a late-night set from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Dining, Cruises, and Alternative Viewing Options
If you want to bypass the traditional beach blanket setup, there are plenty of upscale ways to catch the action:
- Gatsby on the Ocean: Located on the second floor of the historic Art Deco West Bath House, this restaurant offers unobstructed terrace views of the ocean and the fireworks. No reservations are required.
- 4th of July Water Cruises: Multiple fleets offer a water-side view of the sky spectacular. The Captree Fleet ($65), Freeport Water Taxi ($65 adults/$45 kids), and Captain Lou Fleet ($65–$95 for dinner cruises) all depart between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM for scenic holiday cruises.
- Alternative Parks: Avoid the heavy Jones Beach exodus by viewing the fireworks from the pier at Wantagh Park or Cedar Creek Park (free for Nassau residents; $10 for nonresidents), or Nickerson Beach Park ($15 residents; $37 nonresidents).
How to Get There from NYC
Because of the historic scale of the 250th birthday event, timing and transit planning are crucial to beating the holiday rush.
By Train (LIRR) & Bus (The Stress-Free Option)
- Route: Hop on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from Penn Station or Grand Central Madison and take the Babylon Branch directly to the Freeport Station.
- The Connection: Right at the Freeport station, walk downstairs and catch the N88 Nice Bus, which runs a direct, non-stop holiday shuttle service through the salt marshes straight to the Jones Beach West Bathhouse.
By Car
- Pro-Tip: The fireworks go live at 9:30 PM on July 4th, but the parking lots generally fill completely by 4:00 PM on major holiday event days. Plan to arrive early in the afternoon to grab a prime blanket spot on the sand near the Central Mall pavilion.
- The Drive: Take the Queens Midtown Tunnel to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) East. Merge onto the Grand Central Parkway East, which transitions into the Northern State Parkway.
- The Finish: Take Exit 22S onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway South, which leads you directly across the water and straight into the Jones Beach parking fields.
