In some hard-hitting news for summer travelers, New York’s home airline is making some massive changes at a nearby airport.
JetBlue has announced that it is slashing 11 routes across its network just as the busy summer travel season takes off.
Billed by the airline as a necessary trimming of “underperforming” flights, the carrier is pulling resources out of high-cost Northeast hubs and redirecting its focus southward.
New Jersey Travelers Hit Hardest

The heavy brunt of these network cuts will be felt by New Jersey travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). JetBlue is axing a total of five routes from Newark, nearly half of the entire cross-country service reduction.
The five specific routes being completely eliminated from Newark include:
- Newark (EWR) → Aruba (AUA)
- Newark (EWR) → Cancún (CUN)
- Newark (EWR) → Punta Cana (PUJ)
- Newark (EWR) → Santo Domingo (SDQ)
- Newark (EWR) → Tampa (TPA)
JetBlue cited the extreme operating costs and congestion at Newark as primary driving factors, as per various reports including Business Insider.
The Spirit Effect
The sudden route shakeup is part of a much larger shift happening across the airline industry following Spirit Airlines shutting down operations earlier this month.
Spirit’s exit left a major gap in Florida air travel, especially at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, where the airline had been one of the airport’s biggest carriers.
Now, JetBlue is rapidly expanding its presence in South Florida in an effort to capture more travelers and strengthen its position at the airport.
To make room for that growth, the airline is scaling back select routes in other parts of its network — including several flights in the Northeast.
What Affected Passengers Need to Know
The route cuts are scheduled to take effect this summer, meaning thousands of vacationers will find their upcoming travel plans disrupted. Fortunately, the airline is working to make amends for the sudden cancellations.
JetBlue’s Customer Accommodation Policy: > Customers explicitly impacted by the summer Newark cuts are being contacted directly by the airline. Affected travelers will be given the option to be rebooked onto alternative JetBlue flights where available, or opt for a full refund.
