IKEA’s First, Long-Awaited Queens Outpost Opens Today

Written by Bianca Bahamondes and Claire Leaden

Slowly but surely, IKEA is getting around to each of NYC’s boroughs—and their brand-new Queens location finally opens today!

First, in March of 2019 IKEA opened its first Manhattan outpost as a new concept known as the “IKEA Planning Studio” for small space designs with delivery as the only option offered (since there aren’t any in-store products for purchase). Now, the Swedish company is opening their first location in Queens (and third in NYC) that’ll offer its own set of unique qualities.

Last year they announced they leased a 115,000-square-foot space in Rego Center, on Queens Boulevard and Junction Boulevard in Rego Park. The new space will be the first store to open in the U.S. with a new layout, according to the company’s press release.

Originally, the brand’s Rego Center outpost was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020, but due to pandemic delays it was postponed. Still, an IKEA rep confirmed with us that it is finally opening today, Monday, January 11!

You can take a tour here:

Thousands of IKEA products will be available for same-day purchases, while their larger furniture items will be on display but available for home delivery. The store will also offer services like assembly and installation, in addition to interactive spaces for children to create a family-friendly shopping experience.

Here’s a list of their specific offerings:

  • Purchase and take home portable home furnishing accessories that will be curated specifically for New Yorkers.
  • Purchase all other products and set up home delivery for a flat rate fee of $49 for anywhere in New York City.
  • Enjoy self-pay and assisted check out options for a seamless shopping experience.
  • Schedule appointments with IKEA co-workers to plan kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms.

Chief Operating Officer of IKEA Retail U.S., Leontyne Green Sykes, “With a growing community of more than 900,000 households, Queens was a natural next destination for IKEA in New York City. We know that more than half of Queens’ residents travel via public transportation, and we selected Rego Park for this new store concept to meet the unique needs of this customer.”

It will have the same safety measures as other IKEA locations, including physical distancing guidance, preventative hygiene practices, temperature checks for co-workers, rigorous cleaning and sanitization and maintaining strict capacity limits.

The Queens IKEA is located at the Rego Center shopping mall at the corner of Queens Boulevard & Junction Boulevard, just a block away from Q59 and Q60 bus stops and right next to the 63rd Drive – Rego Park subway station. It will open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
