Hudson Valley Shakespeare (HVS) recently opened its massive new permanent theater campus, and they are already hosting an incredible summer event.
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, HVS will host its fifth annual Highland Lights event. This year’s theme is “Assembly: A Procession Of American Luminaries”.
An illuminating 4th of July celebration
This special ambulatory performance is designed to reflect on 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Audiences will journey through the darkened landscape as towering, illuminated lanterns are called forth to assemble into a single luminous creation.
The massive display is actually inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s famous “Join or Die” exhortation.
Led by the internationally celebrated Processional Arts Workshop (PAW), the event honors guiding lights of American reform. The lanterns will honor movements ranging from Universal Suffrage and Civil Rights to Organized Labor and Environmental Justice.
Towering lanterns and live music
The massive lanterns were imagined, built, and brought to life by local community members during free workshops held earlier this spring.
But the glowing visuals are only half the magic. The procession will feature an original five-part choral score by Obie award-winning composer Heather Christian. The score will be performed live by a community choir right here in the Hudson Valley.
The best part? Anyone can join the choir on July 4. You can come solo or bring your own singing group to participate in the performance.
How to attend
The Highland Lights processional will take place at the HVS campus (2015 Route 9, Garrison, NY 10524). Doors open at 8:00pm, and the procession officially begins at 8:30pm.
