With the news of Pope Francis’ death sweeping the globe earlier this week, people from all over including New York City are paying respects to the Catholic icon.
On Tuesday, hundreds of New Yorkers gathered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan to honor him and the Empire State Building even lit up gold and white on Monday night to celebrate his life.
So what’s next for the leadership in Vatican City?
Well funny enough, there’s a movie that explains it…and it even won some coveted Oscars last year.
Conclave, the 2024 movie, stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, and it’s about the process of the papal conclave (choosing the next pope) which is about begin IRL in the next 15 – 20 days.
The movie dives into the process of selecting the new pope, and is based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel about how the secretive process is done.
Cardinals flock to Vatican City for days on end to discuss in private and vote on who they think should be the successor to the pope. Without any communication to the outside world, the voting continues until a two-thirds majority agrees on who becomes the next pope.
In the movie there were 108 cardinals participating in the vote, but in the conclave happening in the coming weeks there will be 135 cardinals.
But how do you stream the pretty accurate movie (in terms of the process at least it is)? We break it down.
