Shake up your holiday with this creative twist on a traditional Christmas show!
If you’re missing the New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker this holiday season, this livestream of a totally unique version of Tchaikovskyʼs classic is the perfect remedy.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a contemporary dance spectacle, envisioned by award-winning choreographer and director Jennifer Weber. Performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, and a violinist, this evening-length production is yours to enjoy straight from the comfort of home.
And MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hopʼs founding fathers, even opens the show and performs the encore!
The show follows the original storyline, with the Nutcracker Prince and Maria-Clara going on a fantastical adventure, battling the Mouse King and his soldiers, roaming through the Land of Sweets, and learning plenty of holiday lessons along the way. But in this case, innovative digital graffiti and virtual art switches out the 19th Century Germany setting for contemporary New York City instead.
And the performance was recorded live at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, giving you a real-time virtual experience.
