Looking to escape the city heat this summer without flying halfway across the country? Well we have the perfect day trip for you.
Just an hour from NYC lies a stunning Olympic-sized swimming hole carved into the earth in 1935—and it just reopened for the season.

Welcome to the Highlands Natural Pool, a breathtaking spring-fed oasis nestled in the lush woods of Ringwood, New Jersey (right across the border from NY).
This unique destination isn’t your average pool. Fed by a mountain stream and free from chlorine and chemicals, it stays naturally cool around 65°F—the kind of refreshing chill you need in the thick of summer.
And yes, it’s big enough to swim laps.
The pool dates back nearly a century and was hand-dug by volunteers from the Nature Friends, a social movement that promoted nature, community, and inclusivity.
Today, it remains a rare relic and retreat, surrounded by an unbelievable scenic wooded setting adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest in New Jersey.

When does Highlands Natural Pool open for summer 2025?
The 2025 season officially kicked off on June 23rd, and Highlands Natural Pool is now open for the 2025 season!
The pool is open on weekends throughout June, then daily in July and August, before ending again on weekends in September.
How to get to Highlands Natural Pool from NYC
Getting there from NYC is surprisingly easy.
You can drive in just about an hour, or take NJ Transit to Sloatsburg and then catch a quick ride via taxi or rideshare to the pool entrance.

What to expect when you visit (beyond the swim)
Of course the refreshing water is everything, but the pool is not just about the swim.
The surrounding Norvin Green State Forest offers miles of hiking trails with skyline views, plus waterfalls and picnic spots.
On-site, there’s a snack bar, volleyball court, ping-pong tables, grills, and even a kiddie area with a shallow zone that’s perfect for families.
While NYC has its fair share of splashy options—like these free public pools reopening in 2025, these rooftop hotel pools, or these nearby swimming holes—there’s something magical about diving into a spring-fed pool surrounded by nature that just hits different.
