We’ve come a long way as a city, and although we love to complain, there’s no doubt that NYC has come a long way over the years. In the 70’s and 80’s, the Subway was one of the most dangerous parts of the city.
Swiss photographer Willy Spiller was here then, and he managed to capture the dark soul of the subway in a series of stark images he has collected into a book called Hell on Wheels.
The photos were first released in 1984, but they have been restored to their former glory in this new book. It gives us a chilling window into the past. We all love to complain about the MTA, but it really has come a long way. Sure, the subway isn’t perfect, but at least it’s not like this.
