There’s nothing quite like Grandmas’ advice, and whether you’re far away from yours or no longer have one with you, this adorable NYC pop-up stand is here for your support. Grandma Stand is connecting New Yorkers with Grandmas from all around the world to be a listening ear or loving adviser.
Mike, the founder, started the pop-up after being inspired by his own grandmother (Eileen). When she was no longer able to travel and visit Mike’s family, he got the idea to put a “Grandma Stand” on street corners to share her love and wisdom with strangers walking by. The idea was retired after her passing in 2018.
But just six months ago, Mike decided that the world “needed more good, more connection, more…grandmas,” so he brought the stand back to life. He’s since adapted a more portable stand that fits on his e-scooter, painted in its now signature purple—Eileen’s favorite color.
Each week, a different Grandma is at the stand, whether in-person or virtually. People are welcome to approach the Grandma Stand and respond to the rotating prompts for more meaningful conversations and connections.
Previous prompt examples include “what’s a risk you took that changed your life?” or “what’s one thing you’d change about how you were raised?” The prompt of the week gets determined through an IG poll.
When asked what makes Grandma Stand so special, founder Mike responded:
Grandmas have a way of disarming you, they only care about you, and who you really are. This gives NY’ers a short respite from stress, anxiety and worry by sitting with a grandma and tapping into their wisdom but also just being heard.
