Grand Bazaar NYC, the city’s largest and oldest weekly market, has been bringing together hundreds of vendors to the Upper West Side each Sunday since 1985, and this weekend they’re celebrating quite the milestone: 40 incredible years!
Originally called GreenFlea Market, Grand Bazaar NYC began as a small yard sale by a group of parents eager to raise funds for their children’s schools. Over the course of the last 40 years, the market has grown to be quite the NYC staple, seeing an annual foot traffic of 500,000 shoppers eager to get their hands on a new treasure.
Today, Grand Bazaar NYC is the oldest, largest, and most diverse curated weekly market in New York City, taking over a whopping 43,000 square feet of both indoor and outdoor space. And though the market has grown it’s remained true to its original goal–100% of its profits are donated to four UWS public schools: P.S. 87, The Computer School, P.S. 334 Anderson School, and M.S. 247 Dual Language Middle School. In total, over 2,000 children reap the benefits.
And this weekend on Sunday, June 1st, the market is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Technically, this weekend’s iteration is being called the Grand Anniversary Bazaar, though being the beloved NYC staple that they are they’ll be celebrating all year long. Their website writes:
Celebrate with us at the Grand Anniversary Bazaar! We’re turning 40 this year, and we’re enjoying every minute of it!…Today you can experience Grand Bazaar in all its glory. Nearly 200 vendors and tens of thousands of visitors from around the corner and around the world can discover a vibrant mix of offerings, from handcrafted goods to gourmet treats, in a festive atmosphere.
As always, you’ll be able to shop a unique selection of vintage, antique, and one-of-a-kind goods. Want an idea of what you can expect? The vendor of the week is Wavelength Antiques, a vintage radio rescuer that resuscitates, refurbishes, and repurposes analog relics into beautifully one-of-a-kind Bluetooth-enabled devices.
And because you’ll understandably shop up quite the appetite, the market’s full food court will be ready and waiting with a wide variety of independent food purveyors to indulge in.
Grand Bazaar NYC occurs every Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm, year-round. You can learn more about the market on their website.
Grab your tote bags and get ready to shop–we’ll see you there!
