Growing up doesn’t have to mean giving up the playground, especially here in NYC.
This summer, one of childhood’s most iconic pastimes is getting a larger-than-life glow–up as a set of giant illuminated seesaws takes over Herald Square, turning an ordinary trip through Midtown into an interactive light show you can actually ride.
Created by Montreal-based designers Lateral Office and CS Design, Impulse features eight oversized seesaws that respond to movement with glowing LED lights and original sound effects. The more people riding together, the more vibrant the installation becomes, which, when you think about it, is a metaphor for New York City and its very own kinetic energy.

Presented by the 34th Street Partnership, Impulse puts an urban, high-tech spin on playground nostalgia. Designed to encourage spontaneous connection among strangers, the installation invites New Yorkers and visitors of all ages to pause their daily hustle and take a turn on the giant beams.
Whether you’re riding with a friend or striking up an unexpected partnership with a fellow commuter, your movement directly controls the light sequence and soundscape. The result is an ever-evolving public art piece that lights up the heart of Manhattan every time someone takes a seat.
