The 160,000 riders who take the G train each day are in for a summer of headaches as the train will unfortunately experience major service disruptions from July through August. Truth be told, this is starting to sound like a broken record.
The MTA announced that another round of signal modernization will be happening this summer–the same reason why the line was suspended for six weeks last summer. But considering the train’s signal system dates back to the 1930s we suppose some work is required.
Work will take place on select weeknights and weekends beginning Monday, July 14th through Monday, August 18th, resulting in no service between Court Square in Queens and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues in Brooklyn. Extensive shuttle bus service will run in place of G train service, with buses stopping at all stations where service is suspended.

Service changes are as follows:
Overnight Diversions from 9:45 pm to 5 am nightly:
- Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18
- Thursday, July 24 to Friday, July 25
- Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 8
- Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15
A fare-free shuttle bus will operate between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues, running every 3 to 4 minutes.
Weekend Diversions from 9:45 pm Friday to 5 am Monday:
- Friday, July 25 to Monday, July 28
- Friday, August 1 to Monday, August 4
- Friday, August 8 to Monday, August 11
- Friday, August 15 to Monday, August 18
A fare-free shuttle bus will operate between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues, running every 5 to 8 minutes morning to evening, and every 10 minutes in the overnights.
The $368 million modernization project will bring more reliable service to straphangers. The caveat: work will continue until Q3 2027. Since the train first shut down in 2024 for work–which involved three phases of 24/7 outages for nine and a half weeks–the MTA successfully installed modern signal equipment across the entire line and completed critical work, including the reconstruction of approximately 30 miles of track.
