Though it’s hard to believe it when we’re facing sub-zero temperatures, winter is considered prime time for stargazing in the Northern Hemisphere. Cold air clears the night sky of clouds and haze, while longer, darker nights make it easier to spot stars, planets, and other celestial show-stoppers.
And if January was any indication, 2026 is already showing off. The year kicked off with a bang when January’s full moon doubled as a Supermoon. Up next? February’s full moon, affectionately (and accurately) known as the Snow Moon.
When is the Snow Moon?
The Snow Moon will reach peak illumination on Sunday, February 1st–but you won’t need perfect timing to enjoy it.
The moon will appear full and bright for a few nights before and after its peak, so you’ve got multiple chances to catch it in action.

What’s the origin of the name?
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name is about as literal as it gets.
February’s full moon earned the nickname Snow Moon thanks to the typically heavy snowfall that blankets much of North America this time of year. In fact, February is historically the snowiest month in the U.S., per the Almanac.
That said, Snow Moon isn’t the only name floating around. Other traditional names for February’s full moon include:
- Hungry Moon
- Bear Moon
- Storm Moon
- Ice Moon
- Bald Eagle Moon
Clearly, February isn’t exactly known for its gentle vibes.
How to see the Snow Moon in NYC
February’s full moon will reach peak illumination at 5:09 pm EST on Sunday, February 1st–just minutes before sunset. For the best NYC viewing, look east around 5:14 pm, as the moon rises over the horizon.
At moonrise, it may appear extra large thanks to the “moon illusion,” a visual trick that makes the moon seem bigger when it’s close to buildings, trees, and the skyline. Translation: it’s prime time for dramatic moon photos.
Just don’t forget to bundle up–a second snow storm is expected to roll through this weekend.
When is the next full moon?
If you miss this one, don’t worry–the next full moon, known as the Worm Moon, will appear on Tuesday, March 3rd.
As for the next supermoon? We’ll have to play the waiting game. The next one won’t arrive until Tuesday, November 24th, when the Beaver Moon closes out the year with a bang.
