It’s almost time for another classic city kid summer.
When school lets out and the long, sun-soaked days of summer arrive, New York City becomes one giant playground for its youngest residents. Of course, one of the best things about growing up in New York is that adventure is never far away. A subway ride can lead to a new favorite park, a community basketball league, an art class, a cultural festival, or a summer memory that lasts long after the school year starts again.
And this year, finding those opportunities is about to get even easier. The city has just launched a new interactive resource designed to help families discover free and low-cost summer programs right in their own neighborhoods and across NYC. Whether your child is interested in sports, music, painting, photography, or simply finding something fun to do during summer break, the new tool aims to connect young New Yorkers with activities they’ll actually be excited about all season long.
Here’s what to know if you’re a parent or, of course, a city kid yourself.

🛝 Meet your new summer planning hack
To bridge the gap between families and city resources, Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched a centralized, mobile-friendly platform built to take the guesswork out of planning the break.
Instead of scrolling through endless PDFs, families and teens can instantly filter hundreds of citywide activities by age group, ZIP code, specific interests, and even travel distance.
Looking for a basketball league? An art class? A STEM workshop? A photography program? The site can help you find it in just a few clicks. It also includes practical resources like locations for free summer meals, plus information on free FIFA World Cup watch parties and celebrations happening around the city

In a statement, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said:
Too often, we tell young people what not to do – but don’t tell them what they should do. This website is about connecting kids and teens to programs they’ll actually be excited about – whether that’s basketball, photography, music or art — and making it easy for families to find opportunities close to home. With summer fast approaching, we are using every tool available to keep young New Yorkers safe, listened to rather than lectured at, and surrounded by community.
☀️ More than just something to do
The city hopes the platform will help kids and teens stay active, creative, connected, and supported throughout the summer. Alongside sports and arts programming, many of the listed opportunities focus on building confidence, learning new skills, supporting mental health, and connecting young people with mentors and positive community spaces.
The website is also part of a larger citywide effort to keep young New Yorkers engaged and supported while school is out.
Through partnerships between city agencies and community organizations, the Summer Safety Plan will expand evening programming, mentorship opportunities, recreational activities, workforce programs, youth events, and community outreach efforts throughout the season.
In other words, yet another unforgettable city kid summer is officially loading.
