With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, NYC is taking strides (or should we say kicks) to build the next generation of soccer players in our favorite city, and ensure that everyone has a chance to celebrate this exciting time for the region.
Whether you managed to score a coveted match ticket or not, New Yorkers now have a free way to join in on the action. City officials have announced the opening of a public FIFA Arena in Central Park, giving soccer fans of all ages and skill levels the chance to play, connect, and celebrate the world’s most popular sport right in the heart of Manhattan.

Located near Tavern on the Green, the temporary soccer pitch will remain open through July 18 and is completely free to use. No registration is required for open play sessions, which run daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to organizers, the FIFA Arena was designed to serve as a community gathering space throughout the tournament, hosting everything from youth clinics and neighborhood competitions to special events aimed at growing the game across New York City, stating:
More than a place to play, it’s a platform for the city’s communities. Throughout the World Cup the field hosts open play, youth programming, community leagues, and marquee events with partners across the city and the sport. Whether you’re lacing up for the first time or chasing your next match, there’s a place for you here.
Several special events are already scheduled throughout the summer, including a Youth Skills Academy for ages 6–14, a Neighborhood Cup tournament, the U.S. Soccer Girls Summit, and a closing celebration on July 18.
