Who says you have to leave New York City to enjoy a quintessential fall adventure? As autumn colors sweep across the five boroughs, Brooklyn is offering a chance to take in the season from an entirely different perspective — right from the water.
On Sunday, October 25, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting a free fall foliage canoe excursion in Prospect Park, inviting New Yorkers to paddle across the park’s scenic waterways surrounded by the vibrant colors of autumn. The 90-minute outing offers a peaceful way to enjoy the season without booking a weekend getaway or leaving the city.

Paddle through fall foliage in Prospect Park
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, Prospect Park offers a leafy escape from the surrounding city streets. Its waterways and wooded landscapes make it a particularly picturesque place to take in the changing seasons, when autumn leaves bring warm shades of red, orange, and gold to the park.
For this special outing, participants can experience the scenery from a canoe, gliding across the water while taking in the fall colors from a unique vantage point. Urban Park Rangers will lead the excursion, guiding participants along the waterways as they explore the park’s natural surroundings.
When is the free canoe excursion?
The free fall foliage canoe excursion is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event is open to participants ages 8 and older, making it a potential autumn outing for families with older children as well as friends looking for something different to do over the weekend.
No registration is required, but participation is first-come, first-served, so arriving early is a good idea. Because spaces may be limited, showing up does not necessarily guarantee a spot.

How to join the Prospect Park canoe ride
The excursion departs from the Audubon Center at the Boathouse in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Participants should plan to arrive with enough time to check in before the 11 a.m. start.
Since the activity takes place outdoors and on the water, it’s worth dressing for the weather and wearing comfortable clothing suitable for a fall morning. Be sure to check the NYC Parks website for any last-minute updates before heading out.
