As spring settles in in full bloom, ordinary strolls through our favorite city just feel all the more magical.
With stunning florals popping up everywhere we turn to the sunshine making everything feel even more serene, the city feels just a bit more fairytale-like.
But for those seeking even more whimsy, there is an escape just outside the concrete jungle that quite literally puts the “fairy” in its name.
South Mountain Reservation’s Fairy Trail is a charming hiking path that trades rugged scrambles for mossy corridors, tiny handcrafted “fairy houses,” and—during the peak of spring—massive blankets of bluebells. It is a low-intensity, high-reward adventure for families, photographers, and cottagecore enthusiasts alike.
🧚♀️ What To Expect
The Fairy Trail (officially part of the Rahway Trail) is less of a grueling workout and more of a scavenger hunt through an enchanted wood.
The path is relatively flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for little feet and those who prefer a leisurely pace. You’ll find yourself surrounded by a lush canopy that mutes the sound of the outside world, replaced by the soft chatter of the Rahway River.
🥾 The Hike
The trail itself is a roughly 1-mile loop (though you can extend it by connecting to the wider reservation trails).
It’s an easy-to-moderate walk that winds through some of the most scenic parts of the 2,112-acre reservation. While the elevation is minimal, the ground can get a bit muddy after a spring rain, so trade the glass slippers for a sturdy pair of sneakers.

🔎 What To Look Out For
Keep your eyes peeled—the magic is in the details! As you walk, you’ll discover:
- Handcrafted Fairy Houses: Look at the base of trees, tucked inside hollow logs, and nestled in rock crevices. Local artists and volunteers have built dozens of tiny homes using only natural materials like bark, acorns, and stones.
- Hobbit-Style Architecture: Some of the larger “dwellings” feature intricate doors and windows that look like they were plucked straight from the Shire.
- Bluebell Carpets: In late April and early May, the forest floor erupts in a sea of vibrant Virginia Bluebells, creating a surreal purple-blue haze beneath the trees.
- The Rahway River: The trail runs alongside the water, offering several spots to sit on a “troll bridge” or a fallen log to soak in the view.

🌳 What Else To Do in the Area
If you want to make a full day of it, South Mountain Reservation has plenty more to offer:
- Turtle Back Zoo: Located right on the edge of the reservation, it’s one of the best-rated zoos in the tri-state area.
- The Waterfront at South Mountain: Take a ride on a swan-shaped paddleboat or enjoy the 1.7-mile paved walkway around the reservoir.
- Downtown Millburn: Just minutes away, this quaint town is perfect for a post-hike brunch or a coffee at a local cafe.
🚊 How To Get There From NYC
The best part? You don’t need a magic wand to get there—just a train ticket or a car.
- By Car: It’s about a 45-minute drive from Midtown Manhattan. Set your GPS for Locust Grove Entrance, Millburn, NJ. Parking is free, but the lot fills up quickly on sunny spring weekends, so try to arrive before 10 AM!
- By Train: Take the NJ Transit Morris & Essex Line from Penn Station to the Millburn Station. From the station, it is a very short (approx. 5-10 minute) walk to the Locust Grove entrance of the reservation.
