October and Halloween season is nearly here, and one Hudson Valley town is set to give New Yorkers the perfect excuse to skip the pumpkin patch and go full gothic instead.
Peekskill, the Westchester waterfront city the New York Times crowned an “artist’s paradise” back in 2022, is about to get a whole lot moodier.
For two nights only this October, a 187-year-old building on Main Street is transforming into a candlelit speakeasy dedicated entirely to Edgar Allan Poe, and it’s exactly as dramatic as it sounds.

Dramatic Hall
We’re talking dim lighting, dramatic historians, and cocktails built around some of the most unsettling short stories ever written.
Here’s everything to know before you book the train!
A speakeasy hiding inside a 187-year-old building
The Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy is set to take over Dramatic Hall, a three-level Main Street landmark built all the way back in 1838 by William Nelson, a Peekskill lawyer and Congressman who counted Abraham Lincoln among his friends.
The building started life as a grocery store, later became a hardware shop, and by 1870 had a small stage tucked away on its third floor known as, fittingly, the Dramatic Hall.
It sat abandoned for roughly two decades before a full restoration in 2012 brought the space back to life, sweeping ironwork railings and all.
Now it plays host to weddings, live performances, and, for one weekend only, a full night dedicated to America’s original master of the macabre.
What the Poe Speakeasy is actually like 🍸
This isn’t a haunted house where people jump out at you.
It’s more of a 90-minute immersive experience where Poe Historians walk guests through four of his most famous stories, each one paired with a custom cocktail built to match its mood.
Here’s the full lineup you can expect once you’re inside:
- The Tell-Tale Heart, paired with the Pale Blue Eye
- The Black Cat, paired with The Cat’s Meow
- The Raven, paired with the Nevermore
- The Masque of the Red Death, paired with the Cocktail of the Red Death
Every drink is crafted by the show’s lead mixologist to match the tale being told, and zero-proof mocktails are available for anyone who’d rather skip the alcohol and keep the drama.
Expect a dark, elegant atmosphere throughout, low light, dramatic flair, and just enough theater to make you forget you’re technically standing in a former hardware store.

When to go and how to get there 🚂
The Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy lands in Peekskill for exactly two nights, October 16 and 17, 2026.
Tickets are 21+ only, and given how quickly this touring show has sold out in other cities, booking early is genuinely worth it.
Getting there from the city couldn’t be simpler, either.
Just hop on the Metro-North Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal, and you’ll roll into Peekskill in about an hour, off-peak tickets run around $14 one way.
No car, no traffic, no stress, just a scenic ride up the Hudson followed by a night that feels nothing like your average Tuesday in New York.

Making a full weekend out of it 🍂
Peekskill earned its “mini Beacon” nickname honestly, thanks to a genuinely thriving downtown arts scene packed with galleries and working studios, and fall might be the best season to see it all in action.
A few ways to stretch the trip into a proper day-to-night itinerary:
- Wander Peekskill’s gallery-heavy downtown, home to one of the largest concentrations of working artist studios in the Hudson Valley
- Grab dinner on Main Street before the show, the walk to Dramatic Hall takes minutes from most of the town’s restaurants
- Catch the sunset over the Hudson Highlands from Riverfront Green Park, one of the best fall foliage viewpoints along the river
- Browse the weekly Peekskill Farmers Market before heading in for cocktails
- Extend the trip into a full day by exploring the shops, murals, and antique stores scattered throughout the arts district
Between the river views, the gallery scene, and now a gothic cocktail experience inside one of the town’s oldest buildings, Peekskill is quietly becoming one of the most interesting little escapes just outside NYC.
