A Hudson Valley tradition since 1841
This is not just any pop-up festival. The Dutchess County Agricultural Society was actually formed in 1841 using a humble $157 grant from the New York State Legislature. When the very first official fair took place in October 1842, there were only 27 states in the Union!
The fair has truly seen it all. In 1910, former President Teddy Roosevelt addressed a staggering crowd of over 30,000 people. Over the years, crowds have been entertained by early air shows and a daring motorcycle stunt known as the “Ride of Death.”
Surviving history and finding a permanent home
The fair has bounced around and faced its fair share of hurdles. It survived the Great Depression, intense flooding, and even had to cancel operations during World War I and World War II.
In 1919, a group of Rhinebeck-based businessmen saved the event by moving it to what would eventually become the permanent Dutchess County Fairgrounds.
It has always drawn a high-profile crowd. Local Hyde Park resident and massive fan Franklin Delano Roosevelt established The President’s Cup in 1933. Decades later, in 1964, an unknown singer named Don McLean won the fair’s talent showcase. He would soon go on to write the legendary 1971 hit “American Pie.”

Today, the fairgrounds offer a beautiful, sprawling destination that perfectly honors its agricultural roots.
You can grab a bite at Foster’s at the Fair (the only indoor dining experience on the grounds), explore the fully restored 1881 Pine Plains schoolhouse, or visit the fan-favorite birthing tent that was added back in 2005.
