Broadway is about to welcome back one of its most legendary musicals: Dreamgirls. Producers announced that a revival of the six-time Tony Award-winning show will debut in fall 2026, directed and choreographed by five-time Tony nominee Camille A. Brown.
First premiering in 1981, Dreamgirls became a cultural phenomenon, telling the story of a 1960s girl group inspired by The Supremes. Its original run lasted nearly four years, sweeping the Tonys and cementing Jennifer Holliday’s showstopping performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” as one of the greatest moments in theater history.
The show’s impact didn’t end there, though.
Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Anika Noni Rose, and Jennifer Hudson brought it to the big screen in 2006, with Hudson winning an Oscar for her role as Effie.
Now, a worldwide casting search is underway, with auditions spanning New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris. Producers say they’re looking for “talented women of all shapes and sizes” to step into the glittering gowns of The Dreams.
With Camille A. Brown spearheading the production, this revival marks the first time Dreamgirls will be newly staged and choreographed for Broadway.
Joining Brown will be London-based producer Sonia Friedman (who produced the British debut of Dreamgirls in London), New York-based producing team Sue Wagner and John Johnson, and Tony-Award-winning-actress-turned-producer LaChanze (who was in the ensemble of the 1987 Broadway revival).
New York theater fans can expect powerhouse voices, dazzling choreography, and a reimagined staging of one of the most electrifying musicals of all time.
