Socrates Sculpture Park is not exactly the most mainstream of New York’s parks but it is quite possibly one of the nicest. Check out all the events the have going on this summer and find an excuse to make it out to Queens!
The Socrates Sculpture Park was founded in 1986 by sculptor Mark di Suvero. The idea was to create a space for community engagement and also an accessible arts space dedicated to supporting artists in the production and presentation of public artworks. Today, Socrates is a New York City public park and a leader in exhibiting contemporary public art. The park spans over 5 acres on the East River in Long Island City. Because the park does not have a permanent collection, all the works on view are temporary.
In addition to the art, the park puts on programs all summer long. The list of things going on is EXTENSIVE so make your plans for a day or two this summer to get over to Long Island City!
