Die Weihnachtszeit ist in vollem Gange, und während Sie die letzten Dinge auf Ihrer Feiertagsliste abarbeiten, ist es wichtig, dass wir auf Kwanzaa hinweisen und darauf, wie NYC dieses Jahr feiert! Vor allem in Harlem und anderen karibischen Vierteln der Stadt haben wir einen Leitfaden über den Feiertag und die Veranstaltungen in NYC zusammengestellt!
Was ist Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa ist ein jährlicher Feiertag, an dem die afroamerikanische Kultur, die Einheit und das Erbe gefeiert werden. Der 1966 ins Leben gerufene Feiertag ehrt die sozialen Werte Afrikas und besteht in der Regel aus großen Festen, Versammlungen, dem Austausch von Geschenken und vielem mehr!
Wann ist Kwanzaa dieses Jahr?
Kwanzaa beginnt in diesem Jahr am 26. Dezember und geht bis zum 1. Januar 2024.
Wie wird Kwanzaa gefeiert?
Kwanzaa wird als einwöchiges Fest gefeiert, wobei jeder Tag für eines der „Sieben Prinzipien“ steht. Im Folgenden finden Sie die 7 Prinzipien von Kwanzaa:
1. Umoja (Einigkeit): Einheit in der Familie, der Gemeinschaft, der Nation und der Ethnie anzustreben und zu erhalten.
2. Kujichagulia (Selbstbestimmtheit): Uns selbst zu definieren und zu benennen sowie für uns selbst zu sprechen und zu gestalten.
3. Ujima (Kollektive Arbeit und Verantwortung): Unsere Gemeinschaft gemeinsam aufbauen und erhalten und die Probleme unserer Brüder und Schwestern zu unseren Problemen machen und sie gemeinsam lösen.
4. Ujamaa (Kooperative Wirtschaft): Wir bauen und unterhalten unsere eigenen Geschäfte, Läden und andere Unternehmen und profitieren gemeinsam davon.
5. Nia (Zweck): Unsere kollektive Berufung ist der Aufbau und die Entwicklung unserer Gemeinschaft, um unser Volk zu seiner traditionellen Größe zurückzuführen.
6. Kuumba (Kreativität): Immer so viel zu tun, wie wir können, auf die Art und Weise, wie wir können, um unsere Gemeinschaft schöner und nützlicher zu hinterlassen, als wir sie geerbt haben.
7. Imani (Glaube): Von ganzem Herzen an unser Volk, unsere Eltern, unsere Lehrer, unsere Führer und an die Rechtschaffenheit und den Sieg unseres Kampfes glauben.
Mit diesen Themen im Hinterkopf wird jeden Tag ein anderes Prinzip in den Mittelpunkt gestellt, das einer Kerze entspricht, die auf einer Kinara (Kerzenhalter) angezündet wird. In der ersten Nacht wird das Prinzip der Umoja (Einheit) diskutiert und die mittlere schwarze Kerze angezündet. Am letzten Tag von Kwanzaa genießen die Familien ein afrikanisches Festmahl, das Karamu genannt wird.
Kwanzaa-Veranstaltungen in NYC 2023
Jetzt, wo wir den Feiertag besser verstehen, sehen wir uns an, wie NYC ihn feiert!
1. Feiern Sie Kwanzaa im Brooklyn Children’s Museum
Dieses Jahr findet die 16. jährliche Kwanzaa-Feier im Brooklyn Children’s Museum statt. Besuchen Sie das Museum und erleben Sie 5 Tage lang Live-Musik, Tanzvorführungen, Wortbeiträge, Kunst, Essen und vieles mehr! Das Programm wird „die Ideen hinter den 7 Prinzipien von Kwanzaa erforschen, indem es die Besucher auf eine Zeitreise in die 1960er Jahre mitnimmt, wo sie die Kulturen verschiedener Orte im amerikanischen Süden und Nordosten erkunden werden“. 2. Kwanzaa-Crawl
Machen Sie mit beim 6. jährlichen Kwanzaa Crawl, einer Kneipentour durch Brooklyn, die in der Weihnachtszeit Tausende anzieht! Mehr als 50 Gruppen mit Tausenden von Menschen werden über 30 von Schwarzen geführte Lokale in sieben Stadtteilen erkunden! Bei dieser jährlichen Tradition gibt es viel zu essen und zu trinken, Musik und jede Menge Spaß, um die von Schwarzen betriebenen Geschäfte während der Kwanzaa-Saison zu unterstützen! 3. PaleyLand Feiertagsextravaganza
Das PaleyLand ist jetzt geöffnet und feiert nicht nur Kwanzaa, sondern auch Weihnachten, Chanukka und den Tag der Heiligen Drei Könige. Es gibt Ausstellungen zu den Feiertagen, Vorführungen zum Thema Kwanzaa und Kunsthandwerk. Der umfangreiche Bestand des Paley Center an Kwanzaa-bezogenen Medien macht dies zum perfekten Ort, um etwas über den Feiertag zu erfahren und gleichzeitig zu feiern! 4. Kwanzaa: Ein Fest der Erneuerung im Apollo Theater
Bei der 18. Auflage dieser Kwanzaa-Aufführung im legendären Apollo Theater in Harlem werden die wichtigsten Merkmale des Feiertags gefeiert: Familie, Gemeinschaft und Kultur. Durch Tanz, gesprochene Worte und Gesang können Sie einen Abend lang eine Aufführung genießen, bei der es um Einheit, Selbstbestimmung, Teilen und das Geben an die lokale Gemeinschaft geht. Die Aufführung findet am 30. Dezember um 14 Uhr und 19:30 Uhr statt.

5. Kwanzaa-Filmfestival
Bei diesem kostenlosen Filmfestival werden verschiedene Filme mit afroamerikanischen Wurzeln gezeigt, die die Wurzeln von Kwanzaa feiern. Es handelt sich um eine Benefizveranstaltung, d. h. es werden Spenden angenommen, und es wird viele tolle Angebote geben! Es gibt Musik, Tanz, Networking, eine Kwanzaa-Kerze und einen Solidaritätskreis mit den Filmemachern. Das Festival findet vom 26. Dezember bis zum 1. Januar statt.
