Während die Hafenbehörde mit der 19 Milliarden Dollar teuren Umgestaltung des JFK-Flughafens und dem Wiederaufbau des LaGuardia-Flughafens weiter vorankommt, wurde mit dem EWR Vision Plan die neueste Sanierungsphase des Flughafens Newark vorgestellt.
Die Designfirma Arup und das Architekturbüro Skidmore, Owings & Merrill haben mit der Hafenbehörde zusammengearbeitet, um einen EWR zu entwerfen, der den wachsenden Anforderungen der Passagiere in den kommenden Jahren gerecht wird.
Der Newark Liberty Airport ist das Tor für Millionen von Passagieren, die hier zum ersten Mal den großartigen Staat New Jersey kennenlernen“, sagte Gouverneur Phil Murphy. „Der EWR-Vision-Plan wird den Status von Newark Liberty als erstklassiges regionales und internationales Verkehrsdrehkreuz festigen. Diese Umgestaltung wird nicht nur den Passagierservice verbessern, sondern auch die Rolle des Flughafens als wichtiger Wirtschaftsmotor für New Jersey und die umliegende Region stärken.“
Der neue Plan sieht den Bau eines neuen Terminals B vor, das auf dem kürzlich in Auftrag gegebenen neuen Terminal A aufbauen soll, sowie die Modernisierung des Straßennetzes und die Überarbeitung der Rollbahn, um Verspätungen zu verringern und Platz für mehr Flugzeuge zu schaffen.
Newarks AirTrain wird ebenfalls durch ein modernes, zuverlässiges, automatisiertes People-Mover-Zugsystem mit einer Länge von 2,5 Meilen ersetzt. Darüber hinaus wird der Bahnhof des Newark Liberty International Airport mit zusätzlichen Zugängen ausgestattet, um unterversorgte Gemeinden zu bedienen.
„Dieser vorausschauende Plan stellt sicher, dass der Flughafen Newark Liberty International auch in Zukunft ein Weltklasse-Drehkreuz für den globalen Handel, den Tourismus und die Wirtschaft sein wird und gleichzeitig das Wirtschaftswachstum und die Beschäftigung für die Einwohner New Jerseys und die gesamte Region fördert“, so die US-Abgeordnete LaMonica McIver. „Neben der Modernisierung und Verbesserung des Kundenerlebnisses von der Bordsteinkante bis zum Flugsteig fördert der Plan auch das Engagement der Hafenbehörde für Nachhaltigkeit und die Verringerung der Kohlenstoffemissionen, was ihn zu einem großen Gewinn an allen Fronten macht.“
Die Hafenbehörde hat die Nachhaltigkeit in den Vordergrund des EWR-Vision-Plans gestellt und ist auf dem besten Weg, ihre Netto-Null-Emissionen bis 2050 zu erreichen.
