If you missed Daniel Radcliffe’s Tony Award-winning performance in Merrily We Roll Along, don’t fret–he’s heading back to Broadway in the spring! This time in a one-actor show, Every Brilliant Thing, which involves something unexpected: audience participation.
The 36-year-old British actor ditched his Harry Potter persona and instead made Broadway his home for the past two decades rather than Hogwarts.
He made his Broadway debut in the 2008 play Equus, and returned to the stage several times over the years in shows such as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan, and The Lifespan of a Fact.
According to The New York Times, Radcliffe said in an interview:
I mean, I love it. I love working in New York. I love working onstage. And I’ve been insanely lucky to be able to do both — to have a stage career and a film and TV career. And want to be able to keep finding reasons to come back to Broadway for as long as I am physically capable of doing so.
Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, a British comedian who originated the lead role, Every Brilliant Thing is about a man who creates lists of all the best things in the world to cheer up his suicidal mother.
A press release describes the show as “exhilarating and heartwarming,” told through “a list of every wonderful, beautiful, delightful thing — big, small and everything in between — that makes life worth living.”
Unlike your usual Broadway play, however, this one is doing something extraordinary: getting the audience involved! Introverts don’t need to fret, though–Radcliffe made it very clear that no one will be required to speak if they don’t want to. He stated:
There’s something about the nature of this play and the connection that is being constantly made with the audience, from before the play even starts when I’m out there interacting with people as they come into the room, that I’m very intrigued by and excited by. This play is built with the audience new every night.
If you do choose to participate though, who knows–this could be the segue into Broadway you’ve been looking for!
First staged at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Every Brilliant Thing transitioned to an acclaimed Off Broadway run in 2014 before expanding to more than 80 countries.
It’s currently running in London’s West End starring Minnie Driver, and was also adapted into an HBO special starring Donahoe. The Broadway production, like the London production, will be directed by Jeremy Herrin and Macmillan. Macmillan stated:
‘Every Brilliant Thing’ tackles some serious subject matter, but the overall experience is one of joy and celebration. Every performance is unique and unpredictable and it requires virtuosic skill from its central performer. When Daniel told us how much he loved the play, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. He has the intelligence, quick-wit and charm to roll with the spontaneous moments that the show invites.
