Warehouse giant Costco is famous for a few things: rotisserie chicken, Kirkland Signature bulk groceries, and highly sought-after cheap gas. But Staten Island drivers seeking affordable fuel must now look elsewhere.
The Costco gas station in New Springville–one of the borough’s most popular fuel stops and one of the busiest Costco pump locations in the U.S.–officially shut down this past September.
The closure was confirmed after construction barriers were placed around the perimeter of the pumps.
Fortunately for local commuters, the shutdown is only temporary. Here’s what you need to know about the closure and when the pumps will reopen.
Why is the Staten Island Costco gas station closed?
While Costco corporate has not issued a formal statement regarding the closure, plans filed with the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) reveal that the New Springville location is undergoing significant safety and infrastructure upgrades.
The renovation project includes installing new gasoline supply lines, expanding the existing pump canopy, and upgrading the fire suppression system.
According to an on-site gas station attendant, the infrastructure has not been updated since 1995, making these modernizations long overdue.

Costco gas is 25 cents cheaper per gallon than competitors
Costco memberships are highly coveted not just for bulk shopping, but for access to some of the cheapest gas in NYC.
Fuel at Costco typically beats local competitor prices by 15 to 25 cents per gallon.
The demand for cheap Costco gas has only grown in recent years.
Driven by consumer demand for fuel savings, the company expanded its pump hours nationwide in 2025—adding an extra hour on weekdays and an additional 1.5 hours on weekends.
The temporary loss of this Staten Island location means local drivers will feel the pinch at the pump until renovations are complete.
When will the Staten Island Costco reopen?
The good news for Staten Island drivers is that the closure won’t last forever.
According to site administrators, the New Springville Costco gas pumps will remain closed until at least November 2026.
The target reopening date aims to have the station fully operational before the busy holiday travel and road trip season begins.
In the meantime, NYC drivers willing to cross state lines will find the next closest Costco gas pumps in New Jersey:
- Bayonne, NJ: Located just under 8 miles from the Staten Island location, this is the quickest detour for NYC drivers
- Union, NJ: Located about 10.4 miles away, this is the second-closest alternative
- Hazlet, NJ / Edison, NJ: Both locations are located about 11 miles away
