The Coney Island Mermaid Parade Is Facing A ‘Financial Crisis’–Here’s What To Know About Whether Or Not It’ll Return For 2026
The 44th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade is set for June 20th, 2026, after a massive community fundraising effort saved the beloved Brooklyn tradition from an urgent financial crisis.
A beloved NYC aquatic-themed celebration has been in troubled waters—quite literally.
Since its origin in 1983, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade has been a vibrant tribute to art, community, and the city’s deep connection to the sea.
Each summer, thousands gather along the Brooklynshoreline as costumed “merfolk,” performers, and spectators transform Surf Avenue into a shimmering procession of creativity and eccentricity.
But in recent years, funding challenges and logistical hurdles have cast uncertainty over the parade’s future, raising the question: can the iconic spectacle continue to make waves for generations to come?
Currently, the iconic parade is now expected to return in 2026, according to it’s official website. This comes after weeks of uncertainty, following what organizers described as an “urgent financial crisis.” Produced by Coney Island USA, the parade is tentatively scheduled for June 20th, 2026, which would mark its 44th annual celebration.

Earlier in March, the organization warned that the event could be canceled without emergency funding—a shocking possibility for a tradition that has defined the start of summer in New York for over four decades.
But thanks to a surge of support, ( a very New York turn of events) the outlook has improved significantly. A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $35,000 toward its $40,000 goal, with roughly 600 donors stepping in to help preserve the event.
The GoFundMe states:
Coney Island USA, the nonprofit that produces the Mermaid Parade, is facing an urgent financial crisis. After a harsh winter and a long fight to protect the neighborhood from a proposed casino development, the organization is now struggling to raise funds needed to prepare for the 2026 parade. Without immediate support, one of New York’s most iconic and beloved summer traditions for over 40 years could disappear.
Coney Island USA is still seeking support to fully secure the 2026 parade and its broader programming. To learn more and offer support, see the official GoFundMe.
