Cue the nostalgia: there’s a Coney Island art exhibit that dials back the clock to the late ’80s.
Christopher Spinelli, who is known for his vibrant color and thick texture, has gotten New Yorkers’ attention for his intricately-painted pianos. His latest exhibit steps away from the instrument and celebrates the beachside neighborhood at the end of the B line through acrylic paintings.
“Brooklyn Dreamland, Land without Shadows” is a whimsical, retro collection that will make you crave a day at the amusement park and a hot dog and crinkle fries at Nathan’s. Beginning Saturday, January 24th, visitors can catch the wild lineup at Arsenal Gallery (64th St and Fifth Ave). Good luck leaving without a hankering for a ride on the Cyclone.
Inspired by the neighborhood’s neon signs and stories from locals, “Brooklyn Dreamland” is a nod to the quirky yet imperfect attraction hub that’s become NYC’s warm-weather destination year after year.
“I began talking to the denizens of Coney Island, who were usually huddled in and around Nathan’s for warmth; I drew them while they regaled me with their stories,” Spinelli said in a statement. “Some of those first sketches are included in this exhibit.”
We’re anxious to see it all. Anyone else counting down to those summer days after hearing about this?
