All about Cold Spring, New York
Bordered by the Hudson River, Cold Spring is a town of about 2,000 and Main Street that stretches about a mile-and-a-half long. Those statistics might seem minimal by NYC standards, but what its most popular destination might lack in congestion it makes up for in beauty.
There’s a traditional vibe with 19th century architecture, greenery, and a unique history — allegedly George Washington had a taste of local waters and gave the Putnam County spot its moniker.

Fast forwarding for present-day it makes for a great day trip without any overnight commitments, if you want to be back home in your apartment come nighttime. So, what exactly should you check off your list? A little bit of everything.
What to do
Coined the best hiking experience in the Hudson Valley, journeys like the Washburn/Cornish trailheads, Notch Trail, and Little Stony Point have unbeatable mountaintop views and a trail that beckons plenty of urbanites to leave the confines of their apartment buildings. (Fair warning, they’re on the more difficult side.)
Though it’s currently undergoing construction, the less challenging Bull Hill (Mount Taurus) is a beautiful and bucolic alternative.
If you’re not one to hike, take things slow on Main Street, the heart of the town. It’s filled with adorable mom and pop stores, including the beloved Cold Spring General Store, complete with home decor, wellness finds, books, and more. You can take a step back in time at Cold Spring Antiques Center as you search for one-of-a-kind retro trinkets that Condé Nast Traveller coined “a fever hoarder’s dream.” For your next read, Split Rock Books is non-negotiable.
Where to eat
When it comes time to eat, there are plenty of place to choose from (but notably no fast food).
For a French influence, Le Bouchon is a go-to for a special evening, but for a more casual atmosphere (with gorgeous outdoor views) Cold Spring Depot has the classics like wings, burgers, steak, and sammies.
Regardless of where you wind up for dinner, one thing is for certain: all dinners should wrap up with a pitstop to Moo Moo’s Creamery.
Now that we’ve mapped out a great afternoon in the Hudson Valley: when are you going to make a visit?
