The characters you’ll encounter on a subway commute are already an interesting bunch, but the holidays seems to bring out the most interesting ones.
During Hanukkah, there was a spinning dreidel twirling their way through NYC’s subway system for the amusement of the commuters (although probably very dizzying).
Now, as Christmas approaches, a mobile tree has been spotted on the train spreading holiday cheer.
According to a report by Gothamist, the person inside the tree has been dressing up and pranking people around the city for several years. He hides in plane sight near other trees, or in random locations along sidewalks, and will move around as people approach—naturally startling passersby. The man beneath the lit up tree goes by Mr. Christmas Tree on Instagram and has been documenting where he goes since December 2017, with visits to the mother tree at Rockefeller Center, touristy photos in Times Square, and frightening people on the sidewalks as he wanders NYC. He even wears camouflage pants that look like a tree trunk!
Only in New York would you find such interesting, and elaborate, holiday spirit.
