Hearts were broken and taste buds turned sour after Klondike announced the discontinuation of the Choco Taco that came in July 2022. However, following a new deal between Taco Bell and Salt & Straw, the beloved summer treat could make a comeback as soon as we’re slipping back into our swimsuits.
Upon the discontinuation, Klondike mentioned a possible return in the coming years. Alas, ice cream lovers were still saddened by the termination of the treat’s 40-year run. However, Salt & Straw confirmed the Choco Taco’s rumored comeback by spilling the secret on their Instagram.
Taco Bell isn’t a stranger to the taco-shaped ice cream as it was once previously sold in Taco Bell locations in Wisconsin and California for a limited time.
According to Fox Business, the Choco Taco will be reinvented into a new version from Taco Bell and Salt & Straw. Cinnamon ancho ice cream will sit within a delicious waffle cone. Toasted brown rice will top the chocolate dipping, differing from the previous version’s peanut topping. Moreover, it will be served with custom sauces including chocolate chili, cinnamon wild berry and mango jalapeño.
Crucial to the new version, Taco Bell and Salt & Straw have supposedly come across a perfect waffle cone formula that doesn’t get soggy. “There’s a lot of food science that we had to do,” said Salt & Straw co-founder, Tyler Malek. “They really have this army of both chefs but also food scientists.”
Once it’s officially released, customers can get their hands on a Choco Taco at Salt & Straw locations (found in California, Washington, Oregon, Florida and Nevada) and online for nationwide shipping. There has been no confirmation about their availability at any Taco Bell locations.
