The East Side Access Project is buried 15 stories below Grand Central Terminal and has been under construction for years. According to the Associated Press, as of this week, progress on the $11 billion project is well underway.
The new transport hub underneath Grand Central will connect the Long Island Railroad to the East Side of Manhattan. The projected is set to serve over 160,000 commuters daily (a 45% increase of Long Island commuters) who will, for the first time, have direct access to Grand Central.
High-speed escalators will lead down to eight tracks where the new LIRR concourse will be located. The engineering marvel will connect trains from Queens underneath the river and straight into Midtown Manhattan. The MTA is focused on completing the project for the December 2022 deadline.
