If you love free sweet treats and community celebrations, you need to head to Brooklyn this weekend.
To celebrate the reopening of the historic Carroll Street Bridge, local curator Igloo is teaming up with Albero Dei Gelati. They are throwing a massive community gelato social this Saturday, June 20, and everyone is invited.
The absolute best part? They are handing out 500 free gelato cones to mark the long-awaited occasion.
A sweet return for a historic Brooklyn bridge
The Carroll Street Bridge is far more than just a standard crossing. It is a vital connection for the Gowanus community.
It also happens to be one of only a handful of retractile bridges left in the entire United States.
Sadly, neighbors have been without it for the last five years. The bridge was closed for extensive repairs and ongoing Gowanus Canal remediation efforts.
To make up for the lost time, organizers are giving away 100 complimentary cones for every single year the bridge was closed.
“The Carroll Street Bridge was a critical connection point for me and my family,” said Adam Joly, Co-Founder of Igloo.
He added that there is truly no better way to celebrate its return than with delicious, local gelato on a perfect summer day.

Block party fun, local art, and canoeing
The gelato social is just the beginning of the weekend fun. The event is happening right alongside a vibrant community block party.
Organized by The Shop, a brand-new Brooklyn coworking platform, the street will be absolutely buzzing with activities.
You can get creative by joining the costume-making workshops hosted by Arts Gowanus.
Feeling a little adventurous? The Gowanus Dredgers will be offering unique canoeing opportunities right on the water.
Plus, you can check out an incredible floating art installation created by Mookntaka.
The event perfectly highlights the continued evolution and collaborative spirit of Gowanus. Igloo has already helped bring local spots like Hey Clay Pottery Studio to the area.
They are also working on highly anticipated upcoming projects like SakeBrooklyn’s new brewery and Focal Point Brewing Co., which will open later this year.
