Nestled just outside Syracuse in Fayetteville, NY, Green Lakes State Park is home to two ancient glacial lakes with striking emerald and sapphire hues. But these waters aren’t just beautiful–they’re a hyper-rare, scientifically significant anomaly that most downstate New Yorkers completely overlook.

One of only 30 lakes of its kind on Earth
At the heart of this 2,160-acre state park lie Green Lake and Round Lake, surrounded by lush, old-growth forest.
What makes these pristine bodies of water a bucket-list destination is their classification as meromictic lakes–an incredibly rare geological phenomenon with fewer than 30 known to exist on the entire planet.
Unlike standard lakes, the water layers here do not mix or “turn over” between seasons.
The result is unbelievably crystal-clear, undisturbed water that acts as a natural time capsule, preserving environmental data from thousands of years ago.
- Ancient Origins: Formed as massive plunge pools during the last ice age nearly 15,000 years ago, Green Lake reaches depths of 195 feet, while Round Lake drops to 180 feet
- The “Annual Whiting”: Every spring and summer, a natural bloom of cyanobacteria triggers a reaction that turns the water into a glowing, translucent mirror of blue and green
Floating over a living prehistoric reef
The wonders don’t stop at the water’s edge.
Because the deepest layers of the lakes have remained undisturbed for millennia, scientists travel from across the globe to study ancient bacterial life forms found here.
The park also features a fragile, visually stunning freshwater reef made of calcium carbonate. Formed over thousands of years by microscopic organisms, these coral-like structures look completely otherworldly–and like nothing you’d ever expect to see here in New York.
You can view the most striking reef formation at Deadman’s Point, visible right from the main lakeside trail. To protect this delicate ecosystem, no outside watercraft are permitted on the lakes.
Clear-bottom kayaks, summer swimming, & old-growth hikes
Whether you want to hit the water or stick to dry land, the park offers plenty of ways to explore:
- 🛶 Clear-Bottom Kayaking: Rent a clear-bottom kayak from the park boathouse to glide directly over the glowing, prehistoric depths
- 🏊 Summer Swimming: Enjoy sandy beach swimming under lifeguard supervision (open daily through Labor Day)
- 🥾 Old-Growth Hiking: Take the breezy 3.5-mile loop trail connecting both lakes. It winds through an ancient old-growth forest with trees dating back to before the American Revolution. Altogether, the park features over 10 miles of trails
- ⛳ Park Amenities: Explore the 18-hole Green Lakes State Park Golf Course, disc golf, playgrounds, and picnic areas

If you’re planning a road trip to experience the “Caribbean of New York,” here are the essential details at a glance:
- 🗓️ 2026 Swim Season: Open daily, 11 am – 7 pm through Labor Day (September 7, 2026)
- 🎟️ Vehicle Entry: $10 per vehicle
- 🛶 Watercraft Rentals (9am-5pm daily through 8/20/26):
- Single 1-Person Kayak: $12/hr
- Double 2-Person Kayak: $20/hr
- Rowboat: $15/hr
- (Note: Private watercraft are strictly prohibited)
- 🎣 Fishing: Permitted on Green Lake only (outside designated swim zones). Prohibited on Round Lake
- 🐶 Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome on leashes, but strictly prohibited on the beach or near sensitive ecological areas
- 🏕️ Staying Overnight: The park features 137 campsites and 7 cabins (bookable via Reserve America). For hotel accommodations, The Craftsman Inn in neighboring Fayetteville offers spacious suites and an on-site restaurant
