The procrastinators among us are wondering, “Can you still get a REAL ID after the deadline?” Fair question!
While you should have a REAL ID by May 7th — there’s plenty you won’t be able to do without one — there are documents that can replace the REAL ID.
Truthfully, it’s not all black and white, so allow us to break it all down for you (should you be a little behind on your DMV visit).
Can you still get a REAL ID after the deadline, May 7th?
While yes, you’re able to get a REAL ID after the May 7th deadline, you’ll need an issued ID in order to board domestic flights and gain entry into some federal institutions.
If you’ve booked a getaway soon after the 7th, you’ll be required to have the REAL ID on hand when flying domestically. Should you not have it in time, you’ll need to use your passport or another TSA-approved form to board.
(FYI, here’s what will happen if you show up to the airport without a REAL ID!)
What happens if I don’t get a REAL ID?
If you don’t get a REAL ID by the deadline, you won’t be able to board domestic flights and gain entry to some federal buildings. TSA spokesperson Dan Velez told the AP that the agency won’t delay the REAL ID deadline again.
However, according to the New York State DMV, you will be able to do the following without a REAL ID:
- Licensed to drive
- Voting or registering to vote
- Entering Federal facilities that do not require a person to present identification
- Applying for or receiving Federal benefits
- Accessing health or life-preserving services
- Participating in law enforcement proceedings or investigations
What is the difference between a REAL ID vs regular id?
According to the New York State DMV, if your New York State license or ID does not have a star or a flag on it, you do not have a REAL ID-compliant document.
