Trader Joe’s has an undeniable cult following across the country, but for grocery shoppers in NYC, TJ’s has become somewhat of a savior for affordable groceries in a sea of outrageously priced supermarkets. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the busiest Trader Joe’s in the world is in NYC. And if you’ve ever shopped at Trader Joe’s on a weekend in NYC, you’ll probably figure it’s your own neighborhood location, but the title only goes to the 72nd and Broadway Trader Joe’s on the Upper West Side.
According to Trader Joe’s, this is “hands down the busiest Trader Joe’s in the world.” The massive store spans two levels (not including the entrance floor), with four escalators and two elevators. To handle the sheer shopper volume, the 72nd and Broadway location has thrice as many checkstands and crew members than an average Trader Joe’s.
The beloved grocery chain dates back to 1967, after first opening in California. There are now nearly 600 store locations across the country.
What makes each Trader Joe’s so unique, beyond its affordable prices, is that they’re specific to the neighborhood in which it stands. Thus, the design, product arrangement, and crew reflect the area itself.
Another noteworthy NYC Trader Joe’s location is the Court Street location in Brooklyn. This Trader Joe’s took over a former bank branch—and yes, it still has the old bank vault in the back.
